VXLAN Functionality in Wireless Networks

1 What Is VXLAN

VXLAN, short for Virtual Extensible LAN, is a network virtualization technology designed to overcome the scalability, flexibility, and security limitations of traditional Layer 2 networks. It encapsulates Layer 2 Ethernet frames over the network layer, or IP layer, extending a Layer 2 logical network across physical infrastructure to create a large Layer 2 network. In simple terms, VXLAN creates virtual dedicated lanes on an existing network highway, allowing devices in different physical locations to communicate seamlessly as if they were on the same LAN.

2 Core Advantages of VXLAN

1 High Scalability

As data centers grow, the 4,096-ID limit of traditional VLANs, or Virtual Local Area Networks, makes large-scale deployment difficult. VXLAN uses a 24-bit VNI, or VXLAN Network Identifier, theoretically supporting 4,096 x 4,096 virtual networks and greatly increasing network scalability.

2 Greater Flexibility

VXLAN supports Layer 2 communication across physical networks. Virtual machines and containers can therefore communicate directly as if they were on the same LAN, regardless of their physical location, as long as they belong to the same VXLAN. This flexibility simplifies network design and reduces operational complexity.

3 Improved Security

VXLAN can be combined with encryption technologies such as IPsec to protect data transmitted across networks. Granular access control policies can also prevent unauthorized devices from joining a VXLAN, strengthening overall network security.

3 Wireless VXLAN

Wireless VXLAN combines VXLAN virtualization with wireless flexibility to support communication between client devices and access points, or APs. It helps large and complex wireless environments scale and operate more efficiently while supporting greater automation.
